Hurricane Idalia threat prompts opening of Jasper County Shelter

Jul 03, 2023Jul 03, 2023

Jasper County Emergency Services announced this morning that an emergency shelter is opening for those who need a place to go during Hurricane Idalia.

The shelter opened Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Ridgeland Secondary Academy of Excellence Gymnasium, located at 250 Jaguar Trail in Ridgeland.

"This shelter, operated by Jasper County Emergency Services along with support from state and local partners, can accommodate anyone who needs a safe place to stay temporarily along with their pets," a news release said. "Please do not call 911 regarding the shelter and needs; please call 843-726-4421 (for further information)."

Officials ask that those coming to shelter bring with them: personal hygiene products; bedding items, such as their own blankets and pillows; important documents for identification; a three-day supply food for those with restrictive diets; and at least a seven-day supply of any medications along with prescription information.

Officials said residents seeking shelter with their pets must bring a crate; pet food; vaccination records and rabies certificates; most recent heartworm test; most recent FeLV/FIV test result (for cats); at least a seven-day supply of their medications; litter and litter box (for cats), cleaning supplies, and food and water bowls. Pets who are not service animals will not be permitted in the main shelter area due to safety considerations.

A pet disaster kit checklist is available at hurricane.sc/pets and in the SC Emergency Manager mobile app.
